Scotland braces for cold and snow as Met Office says ‘dig out your winter coats’

Forecasters from the Met Office have issued a warning for Brits to ‘dig out’ their cosy coats once again as temperatures are set to fall once again.

It seemed as if spring had finally arrived in the UK as Wednesday was recorded as the warmest day of the year so far. The sun may still be in the sky today, but meteorologists have warned that there could even be snowfall in some areas of the UK.

The Met Office have said that the mild weather isn’t set to last with chilly air and adverse conditions on the way, reports Manchester Evening News. Forecasters said that there may even be some wintry showers limited to hillier areas in Scotland.

The Met Office wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “Temperatures have been above average today, but come this time tomorrow temperatures will be a good 3 to 6 Celsius lower for many. You may need to dig out the winter coat for tomorrow and into the weekend as the northwesterly wind will make it feel colder than the thermometer suggests.”

They added: “Colder air will filter south over the next 24 hours. Showers across the north of the UK will fall as snow over the high ground, which is not unexpected for this time of year.” According to the Met Office’s interactive weather map, temperatures could drop to 2C in Scotland tomorrow with snow falling across the north of Scotland in areas like Fort William and Pitlochry. The snow will continue throughout the day on March 23 and will head across to Aberdeen by 11pm that evening before drifting off.

The long-range weather forecast for the UK states that conditions will remained “unsettled” for the majority of the country throughout next week with “spells of rain or showers for most”.

The forecast read: “Unsettled across the majority of the UK next week, with spells of rain or showers for most, if not all, areas, strong winds in places and temperatures near to a little below normal for late March. Perhaps staying relatively drier in the north, with some wintry showers possible in the far north of Scotland.

“Through the bank holiday weekend and into the following week, unsettled or changeable weather remains the most likely outcome. All areas are likely to see further rain or showers at times, with some drier spells in between, but wet weather will tend to favour the southwest while northern parts remain a bit drier on average. Temperatures will probably continue near normal for the time of year.”
